Following the resounding success of his debut performance last season, pianist Yuanfan Yang made a much-anticipated return to the North Fylde Music Circle on April 4th for an evening recital that effortlessly blended the romantic brilliance of Chopin with Yang’s own dazzling creativity. This year’s programme was specially curated to celebrate the 215th birthday of Frédéric Chopin and commemorate the 175th anniversary of his death. The result was a heartfelt tribute to one of classical music’s most enduring and beloved composers, presented by a pianist who is quickly becoming a favourite among Fylde audiences.
The evening opened with a shimmering transcription of Glinka’s Valse-Fantasie arranged by Gyraznov—a piece filled with elegance and lyrical momentum that set the stage for the Romantic grandeur to follow. Yang then launched into Chopin’s monumental Sonata No. 2 in B-flat minor, Op. 35, known widely for its iconic Funeral March. With poised intensity, he navigated the sonata’s dramatic contrasts—from stormy passion to haunting solemnity—capturing the emotional depth that has made this work a staple of the Romantic piano repertoire.
Without missing a beat, Yang followed with Chopin’s Scherzo No. 2 in B-flat minor, Op. 31. A virtuosic and fiery performance, it showcased his command of both precision and expressive nuance, drawing audible gasps and murmurs of appreciation from the audience. After a brief interval, the second half of the programme resumed with Chopin’s luminous and flowing Barcarolle in F-sharp major, Op. 60, a dreamlike gondolier’s song rendered with delicacy and subtle colour.
A selection of Chopin Waltzes followed, offering a delightful contrast—graceful, effervescent, and occasionally wistful, reminding listeners of Chopin’s singular ability to infuse elegance with profound emotion. Chopin’s early masterpiece, the Variations on ‘Là ci darem la mano’, Op. 2, was next—an ambitious and youthful work that famously impressed Robert Schumann. Yang brought energy and playful charm to this operatic homage, clearly enjoying the theatrical dialogue between piano and Mozart’s beloved duet.
In a tradition that has become something of a signature for Yuanfan Yang, the evening concluded with a truly unique experience: Improvisations on Themes and Styles Suggested by the Audience. Taking musical cues live from the crowd, Yang spun spontaneous compositions that ranged from jazzy riffs to baroque-style inventions, stunning listeners with both his musical versatility and lightning-fast creative instincts.
Yuanfan Yang's return was met with rapturous applause, and it's no surprise—his playing is technically masterful, emotionally sincere, and deeply communicative. Whether interpreting the timeless works of Chopin or composing on the spot, he brings an energy that feels both classical and completely fresh.
As he continues to rise in the international music scene, audiences in North Fylde are lucky to enjoy the artistry of this remarkable pianist in such an intimate setting. Hoping to witness more outstanding performances from the finalist of Classic Piano 2024!
